What is self-love?
It is defined in the dictionary as the instinct by which one's actions are directed to the promotion of one's own welfare or well-being, especially an excessive regard for one's own advantage. Self-love is the belief you hold that you are a valuable and worthy person. An example of self-love is when you have a positive view of yourself and are confident in yourself and your place in the world.
Many have the belief that self-love is an act of vanity or conceit; this actually creates a world of people who don't honour their own needs over someone else's. How are we to help someone else if we can't first help ourselves? Our airlines tell us to place the mask on ourselves first before we assist someone else. Because they know if everybody is busy helping everybody else and not taking care of themselves when they land the outcome will not be very good as people will have become unconscious or worse case dead. So when we get caught up in everybody is more important than us we look for other ways to quieten the belief that we are important and have value.
Have we become a society that is unconscious to our own needs? Maslow hierarchy of needs shows us that we need to become fulfilled in the following areas.
PHYSIOLOGY - breathing, food, water, sex, sleep, homeostasis, excretion
SAFETY – security of: body, employment, resources, morality, the family, health, property
LOVE/BELONGING – friendship, family, sexual intimacy
ESTEEM – self-esteem, confidence, achievement, respect of others, respect by others
SELF-ACTUALISATION – acceptance of facts, morality, creativity, spontaneity, problem solving, lack of prejudice
When we are attempting to remove a behaviour from our life, we need to take some time and discover where this was actually formed. In many cases with the behaviours of smoking and drinking these come in to the area of love/belonging. These behaviours may have started for you as a social activity. Someone in a group may have offered you a drink or cigarette and you accepted because on an unconscious level you created the belief that if he didn't accept it you would not fit in.
The smoking and drinking is a symptom of a limiting belief. You may have formed a belief the only way I will be accepted and fit in is if I smoke or drink or both. Or I don’t want to draw unwanted attention to myself so I will just go along with what everyone else is doing. This wanting to belong is a strong need, even if we are not enjoying the activity, we participate anyway regardless. If you go back to that event where you were offered either cigarettes or a drink sit and feel the emotions and feelings that come up for you.
When you now have a drink or a cigarette do you still feel those feelings? Unconsciously we want to relive that feeling of belonging every time we partake in that behavior. We have anchored these feelings and emotions into this activity. This can also carry through with food, drugs or sexual activity.
Once we form these habits if we don't go back to the core belief and address it at that level, we add further stress to our lives and believe that we lack willpower to let these habits go.
